Before Your Nutrition Visit: Call Your Insurance
You need to call your insurance company before your appointment to avoid surprise bills.
What to Ask Your Insurance Company:
1. "Do I have nutrition counseling coverage?"
Give them these codes if they ask: 97802 & 97803
If those don't work, try these codes: 99401, 99402, 99403, 99404, or S9470
2. "Will my diagnosis be covered?"
Give them this diagnosis code: Z71.3
If that doesn't work, try: Z72.4
If you have other health conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc.), ask about coverage for those too
3. "How many nutrition visits do I get per year?"
This varies by insurance plan (could be 0 to unlimited)
4. "Do I have to pay anything out of pocket?"
This could be a copay, deductible, or coinsurance
If you have preventive benefits, you might not pay anything
Dietitians are often considered specialists, so you might have a specialist copay
5. "Do I need a referral to see a dietitian?"
6. "Does it cost different if my visit is by video versus in-person?"
How Payment Works:
We bill your insurance first
If you owe money, we'll charge the credit card you gave us
We usually wait to see what insurance covers before charging you
